Sant'Apollinare in Classe

The great basilica in the countryside, five kilometres from Ravenna.

Consecrated in 549, it stands where the Roman port of Classe once was. The apse mosaic shows Saint Apollinaris in a green meadow among sheep, beneath a great cross in a starry sky.

It is one of Ravenna's UNESCO monuments, but has a separate ticket. A few minutes away are the Classis museum and the archaeological area of the ancient port.

Opening days, times and tickets change through the year: always check the official site before you set off.
