Which area to choose
The Riviera
From Cattolica to Marina di Ravenna it is one long row of hotels a few steps from the beach, many of them family run. Rimini and Riccione for nightlife, Cesenatico, Bellaria and Cervia for families, Milano Marittima for those after elegance.
The art cities
Bologna, Ravenna and Ferrara are best seen on foot, so it pays to stay in the centre. On trade fair days in Bologna and Rimini prices rise and rooms sell out fast: look at the events calendar before you book.
Hills and villages
Around Brisighella, Bertinoro, Santarcangelo and the Montefeltro you find farm stays and B&Bs among vineyards and olive trees, half an hour from the sea. You need a car, or a transfer.
Spas and the Apennines
Bagno di Romagna, Castrocaro Terme, Riolo Terme and Castel San Pietro Terme are the spa towns, with dedicated hotels. Higher up are the hotels and mountain huts of the Foreste Casentinesi park.
