ZTL and parking: driving in the towns of Romagna

Almost every old town is a ZTL, a limited traffic zone watched by cameras. Here are the rules town by town, what to do if you sleep in the centre and where to leave the car.

What a ZTL is, and why the fine arrives months later

At the entrance there is a sign saying ZTL with the hours, and above it a camera that photographs your plate. If you enter without a permit nobody stops you: the fine arrives at your home, also abroad, sometimes months later. With a rental car it first reaches the rental company, which usually adds a fee for passing on your details.

  • Read the sign

If the lit sign says "varco attivo" (gate active) the ZTL is in force: do not drive in. "Varco non attivo" means you may pass at that moment.

  • Your satnav does not know

Your satnav takes the shortest road, even through the ZTL. Near the old towns follow the car park signs, not the arrows on your phone.

  • Hotel in the centre

If the hotel is inside the ZTL, send it your plate before arriving: almost everywhere the hotel registers it, within a set deadline. Without registration the fine arrives anyway.

  • Park outside and walk

The town centres of Romagna are small: from the car parks below you reach the main square on foot in a few minutes.

Perimeters, car parks and charging points come from OpenStreetMap and the towns' open data: where the ZTL is not drawn the description below applies, and on the road the signs always prevail.

  • Bologna

    The ZTL

The old town is a ZTL every day from 7 am to 8 pm, watched by the cameras of the Sirio system. The T Zone (via Rizzoli, via Indipendenza, via Ugo Bassi) and the pedestrian areas are closed 24 hours a day. Drivers without a permit can buy a one-day or four-day ticket.

If you sleep in the centre

Hotels and B&Bs in the centre send their guests' plate numbers to the town, so guests are not fined. Give yours at check-in, or before you arrive.

More tips for drivers

  • Parking lines

Blue lines: paid. White: free, sometimes with a parking disc. Yellow: reserved (residents, disabled, loading).

  • At the seaside in summer

In summer the Riviera resorts close their seafronts and evening strolling streets to traffic: follow the signs, they change every season.

  • Disabled badge

The European badge is valid in Italy too, but to pass the gates the plate must be sent to the town: ask your hotel or the local police how.
