Basilica of San Vitale

The mosaics of Justinian and Theodora: Ravenna's Byzantine masterpiece.

Consecrated in 547, it has an octagonal plan rare in the West. In the apse the mosaics show Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora with their courts, on a gold ground that fills the whole space.

It is one of the eight monuments of Ravenna listed by UNESCO since 1996. You visit it with the combined ticket that also includes the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, right next door.
