Before Halloween: the night of the Dead
Long before the pumpkins, the countryside of Romagna had its own rites for the dead, between All Saints and 2 November. Here are three, with their sources.
-
The beans of the Dead
In 1818 Michele Placucci of Forlì noted that on the Day of the Dead the peasants of Romagna all ate beans and gave some to the poor, so that they would remember to pray for the dead.
-
The grain and the candle on the grave
Placucci also tells that on the Day of the Dead every head of family carried a white cloth full of grain to the parish church, spread it over the grave of his dead and lit a candle on it. When mass was over, the grain went to the priest.

The piada dei morti
It is not a piadina: it is a round sweet focaccia, topped with raisins, almonds, walnuts and pine nuts. The old recipes used grape must, today the raisins are often soaked in Sangiovese. It was born in Rimini and the bakeries of the area sell it from October to November, for the Day of the Dead.
How much is true: People say it comes from the Celts, who really did live in Romagna, and from their feast of Samhain, when the dead came back home and the Mazapégul went round the houses: it is a legend, no document proves it. More concrete is the recipe of Ciro Brunori, pastry cook of the old Vecchi pastry shop in the Borgo San Giuliano of Rimini, in the early twentieth century.Sources: Wikipedia, «Piada dei morti» · Scatti di Gusto, «Piada dei morti, la ricetta del dolce romagnolo»
