Pomposa Abbey
The Benedictine abbey whose bell tower is seen from kilometres away.
Along the Romea road, in the municipality of Codigoro, Pomposa was in the Middle Ages one of the most important monasteries in northern Italy. The Romanesque bell tower, almost fifty metres high, dates from 1063; inside the church the walls are covered in fourteenth-century frescoes.
The monk Guido of Arezzo, to whom we owe modern musical notation, lived here.
