Castles and fortresses
Este Castle
The castle with a water-filled moat in the centre of Ferrara.
Begun in 1385 as a fortress to defend the Este family from a revolt, it later became the residence of the court. It has four towers, drawbridges and a moat still filled with water.
You visit the prisons, the ducal kitchens, the frescoed rooms and the Garden of Oranges. Ferrara, city of the Renaissance, has been a UNESCO site since 1995 and is perfect to explore by bicycle.
Opening days, times and tickets change through the year: always check the official site before you set off.
