Chiesa di Sant'Agostino

Rimini's oldest church, with the city's tallest bell tower and frescoes by the 14th-century Rimini school.

The first record dates from 1069, when it was a small oratory dedicated to St John the Evangelist. In 1256 it passed to the Augustinian friars, who rebuilt it in Romanesque-Gothic style: since then, for all the people of Rimini, it has been Sant'Agostino.

The bell tower, 55 metres high with a pyramidal spire, is the tallest in the city and for a long time served as a lighthouse for sailors.

The church is where 14th-century Rimini painting was born: Giovanni da Rimini, considered the head of this Giottesque school, lived right in the neighbourhood. The frescoes in the main chapel and the bell tower, depicting scenes from the saint's life, came to light again after the 1916 earthquake.

You can visit in small groups, only the nave; access to the presbytery and bell tower with the frescoes is by guided tour only. The other masterpieces of 14th-century Rimini art are in the Museo della Città.
