Piazza Tre Martiri
The ancient Roman forum at the crossing of cardo and decumanus: the Clock Tower, Julius Caesar and the memory of the Resistance.
This was the forum of Roman Rimini, at the crossing of the decumanus, today's Corso d'Augusto, and the cardo, today's Via Garibaldi and Via IV Novembre. For centuries it was the herb market, as the arcades still tell you.
The name commemorates three young partisans, Mario Cappelli, Luigi Nicolò and Adelio Pagliarani, executed here on 16 August 1944: the spot is marked by a marble insert. At the foot of the tower there is also the War Memorial.
The Clock Tower was built in 1547 and gave the square its present shape; the upper part was demolished after the earthquake of 1875. Since 1750, next to the clock there has been a dial with the calendar, the zodiac and the phases of the moon.
A sixteenth-century stone marker recalls the speech that Julius Caesar is said to have made to his legions after crossing the Rubicon; this is why there is a bronze statue of Caesar in the square, a copy of a Roman original. At the centre, the Renaissance sun in the pavement marks the crossing of cardo and decumanus, the navel of the city.
