Roman Amphitheatre of Rimini

The third great monument of Roman Rimini: here gladiators fought before over ten thousand spectators.

It was built around the mid-2nd century AD: a coin of Emperor Hadrian found in the mortar dates it. It had an elliptical shape, an arena of about 76 by 47 metres and sixty arches, and could hold ten to twelve thousand people.

Gladiatorial games and animal fights took place here. The crowd decided the fate of the defeated: if they shouted missum he was free, thumbs down was a death sentence.

In the 3rd century it was incorporated into the city's new walls; then it was plundered and dismantled, and the worst damage came with the Second World War. Today the arena walls remain, one of the main entrances and some access points to the seating tiers.

It is the only Roman amphitheatre still visible in Emilia-Romagna. To understand it better, in the Museo della Città you will find a step with seat numbers and drawings of what it must have looked like; guided tours can be arranged with the Musei Comunali.
