Castles and fortresses
San Leo Fortress
The fortress on a Montefeltro crag where Cagliostro died.
The fortress stands on top of a sheer crag above the Marecchia valley. Its present shape is due to Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who redesigned it in the fifteenth century for Federico da Montefeltro. It later became a prison: Count Cagliostro died here in 1795.
At the foot of the fortress lies a small, intact village, with the Romanesque parish church and cathedral a few steps from the square. You go up on foot or by shuttle.
