Chiesa di San Pietro
The small church next to the Basilica, recently restored: in the apse carved into the rock are the stone beds of Saints Marino and Leo.
Tradition attributes its foundation to Saint Marinus himself. The church you see today dates from the 17th century and stands in Piazzale Domus Plebis, beside the Basilica. After about four years of restoration work, it was reopened on 25 September 2026.
The apse is carved into the living rock of Mount Titano. Here you can see two stone beds which, according to tradition, were the sleeping places of Saints Marinus and Leo, the two stonemasons who came from Dalmatia; even today people attribute healing powers to them, especially to the bed of Saint Marinus.
The interior is neoclassical, with a domed ceiling decorated in gold. On the coloured marble altar stands the statue of Saint Peter by Enrico Saroldi; in the crypt a relief by Romeo Balsimelli shows the patron saint with a bear.
In 1849 Giuseppe and Anita Garibaldi took refuge here whilst fleeing after the fall of the Roman Republic. Admission is free and visits are by request to the custodian of the Basilica.
