Museo di Stato

The history of the Republic across four floors: finds from the Stone Age, the Gothic treasure of Domagnano and paintings from Guercino's school.

The museum was founded in the second half of the 19th century and opened to the public in 1899. Since 2001 it has been housed in Palazzo Pergami Belluzzi, in piazzetta del Titano, in the city centre. It holds around 5,000 pieces including archaeology, art and coins.

On the ground floor you'll find the archaeology of the territory: an 8th-century BC hut discovered at Poggio Castellano, votive offerings from the sanctuary of Tanaccia on the rock of Titano, and Roman settlements from the surrounding hills. Here you can also learn about the treasure of Domagnano, the gold jewellery of the Goths from the 5th and 6th centuries found by chance in the late 19th century. From the ancient parish church, demolished in the 19th century, a few pieces remain along with a Renaissance polyptych by Francesco Menzocchi.

On the first floor you'll find art connected to the Republic, with paintings by Guercino and his pupils and works that once adorned the public buildings and churches of the city. On the second floor are works donated by collectors from around the world; below, the section of San Marinese coins and medals.

This is the right place to understand San Marino before climbing up to the towers. The ticket is the State Museums Pass.
