Piazza della Libertà
San Marino's drawing room: the Palazzo Pubblico, the Statue of Liberty in Carrara marble and a terrace overlooking the valley.
This is the main square of the City of San Marino, the political heart of the Republic. On one side stands the Palazzo Pubblico, seat of government and parliament; opposite it the Parva Domus, the small house of the Commune, already mentioned in 14th-century documents and now home to the Secretariat of State for Internal Affairs.
At the centre stands the Statue of Liberty, carved in Carrara marble by Stefano Galletti. It was a gift to the Republic from a German noblewoman, Otilia Heyroth Wagener, and was inaugurated on 30 September 1876. It depicts a warrior woman striding forward with outstretched arm and a banner in her hand; on her head she wears a crown with three towers, the towers of Titano.
On one side the square opens out like a terrace: your gaze sweeps down over the valley and the surrounding hills. It is also the stage for the Republic's celebrations, and in summer the changing of the guard takes place in front of the palace.
The square is always open and free. It is the starting point for exploring the city on foot: in just a few minutes you can reach the Basilica, the State Museum and the climb up to the towers.
