Ponte di Tiberio
Two thousand years old and still standing: the Roman bridge over the Marecchia where the Via Emilia and Via Popilia begin.
It was commissioned by Emperor Augustus and completed by his successor Tiberius, between 14 and 21 AD. Built of Istrian stone, it has five arches and is one of the best-preserved Roman bridges in existence. It marks the point where two great consular roads began: the Via Emilia towards Piacenza and the Via Popilia towards Ravenna and Aquileia.
The secret of its longevity lies beneath the water. The piers are not separate but widen at the base and rest on a system of wooden piles; they also have breakwater spurs set at an angle to the road, designed to work with the current rather than against it. This is how the bridge has survived earthquakes and wars.
Since 1885 it has been a national monument and today it is pedestrianised. On one side is Corso d'Augusto, the main street of the centre; on the other is Borgo San Giuliano, the old fishermen's quarter with its painted houses.
Don't stop on the bridge: go down to the waterside square overlooking the basin, where you can see it whole with its arches reflected. Next to it, the archaeological park Le pietre raccontano explains its history and has a panoramic terrace looking towards Parco Marecchia.
