Mausoleum of Obulaccus and Archaeological Museum of Sarsina

The museum of Roman Sarsina, with its nine-metre-high marble mausoleum: one of the most important in northern Italy.

Sarsina was the city of the Umbrian Sarsinates and later a thriving Roman municipium in the Savio valley. The National Archaeological Museum houses what has been unearthed in excavations of the city and its necropolises: it is one of the most important Roman museums in the region.

The most spectacular piece is the mausoleum of Aulus Murcius Obulaccus, discovered in 1929 in the necropolis of Pian di Bezzo. It is a white marble funerary monument from the 1st century BC, about nine metres high, with a square base and an upper section shaped like a small temple with a spire: it was reassembled piece by piece after lengthy restoration.

In the rooms you also see mosaics from the floors of Roman houses, statues of oriental deities such as Cybele and Attis, inscriptions of citizens and grave goods from tombs. You realise how wealthy Sarsina was and how connected to the rest of the Empire.

The museum is in the centre of the town, a stone's throw from the Basilica of San Vicinio. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month.
