Rocca Fregoso, Sant'Agata Feltria

The castle on the Sasso del Lupo, given as a dowry to Federico da Montefeltro's daughter: today it's the Rocca delle Fiabe, a museum for adults and children alike.

The fortress stands on a sandstone spur, the Sasso del Lupo, and dominates the houses of Sant'Agata Feltria. It was probably built around the year 1000 by the Cavalca family, counts of Bertinoro, and over the centuries passed to the archbishops of Ravenna, the Faggiolani, the Malatesta and finally the Montefeltro.

Federico da Montefeltro had it modernised by Francesco di Giorgio Martini and gave it as a dowry to his daughter Gentile, wife of the Genoese Agostino Fregoso. Under the Fregoso family, who gave it their name, the fortress gradually became a noble residence, enlarged and raised between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Today it's the Rocca delle Fiabe, a museum created from a project by Antonio Faeti, a scholar of children's literature. The rooms are divided into four themes, from fairy-tale shoes to the enchanted traveller: a journey designed for children but which adults enjoy too, among walls, towers and views over the valley.

Sant'Agata Feltria is one of the liveliest villages in the Valmarecchia. In October, every Sunday, the National White Truffle Fair fills the streets; in December the village becomes the Christmas Village. In Palazzo Fregoso, on the square, there's the Teatro Angelo Mariani, dating from 1723.
