Teatro Alessandro Bonci
Cesena's 19th-century Italian-style theatre, red and gold: one of the most beautiful in Romagna.
Cesena's municipal theatre was designed by architect Vincenzo Ghinelli and inaugurated in 1846. It's a classic Italian-style theatre, with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium, four tiers of boxes and a gallery, decorated with gilded stucco and red velvet, and a painted ceiling.
It bears the name of Alessandro Bonci, the great tenor born in Cesena in 1870, who sang in theatres around the world, from the Metropolitan in New York to Covent Garden in London. In the city he was a national glory.
The Bonci isn't a museum: it's a living theatre, with a season of drama, dance and music among the most popular in the region, now curated by Emilia Romagna Teatro. The best way to see it is to buy a ticket for a performance and enjoy the illuminated auditorium before the lights go down.
On certain occasions, such as the Fiera di San Giovanni in June, the theatre opens for guided tours that also take you backstage and beneath the stage. The theatre is in Piazza Guidazzi, a stone's throw from Piazza del Popolo and the Biblioteca Malatestiana.
