Cattedrale di San Pietro

Faenza's Renaissance cathedral, the work of a Florentine architect: inside, the shrine of Saint Savino by Benedetto da Maiano.

It was built between 1474 and 1520 on the site of an older cathedral. It was designed by Giuliano da Maiano, a Florentine architect trusted by the Manfredi family, sent to Faenza as part of good relations with the Medici. The result is a piece of Florence in Romagna: alternating pillars and columns, regular rhythms, plenty of light.

The brick façade remained unfinished: it never received the marble cladding that was planned, and precisely for this reason it has a severe charm, facing onto Piazza della Libertà with the monumental fountain in front.

Inside, in the side chapels, are the shrines of the city's patron saints. The most precious is that of Saint Savino, carved in marble by Benedetto da Maiano, Giuliano's brother, with scenes from the saint's life in relief.

It is open every day and admission is free. Visit it together with Piazza del Popolo and the fountain square: the centre of Faenza can all be walked round in an hour.
