Via degli Asini
A raised, covered medieval street with arches all different from one another: the passage of carters and their donkeys, unique in Italy.
Its official name is Via del Borgo, but everyone calls it Via degli Asini (Donkey Street). It was built in the Middle Ages as a defensive walkway along the walls of the borgo, on the first floor of the houses, protected by a roof and open to the outside through a row of arches.
Later it became the street of the carters, who used donkeys to transport gypsum extracted from the quarries in the hills. The houses on either side were their homes and stables: the animals lived below, the families above.
You walk through a gallery of light and shadow, with a wooden floor and semicircular arches of different widths, because each house built its own. Through the openings you can see the Torre dell'Orologio and the rooftops of Brisighella.
It is always open and takes just a few minutes to walk through, but it is the ideal starting point for climbing up to the Rocca and the Torre. During Brisighella's medieval festivals in June and July, it comes alive with music and torches.
