Coriano Ridge War Cemetery
On the ridge fought over for days in September 1944, 1,940 Commonwealth soldiers rest: the largest war cemetery in Romagna.
The Coriano ridge, between the Valconca valley and Rimini, was one of the hardest points of the Allied attack on the Gothic Line: in September 1944, British, Canadian and New Zealand troops fought here for days against German defences before they could advance towards Rimini, liberated on 21 September.
The cemetery was created after the war by gathering the fallen from temporary graves in the area. Today 1,940 Commonwealth soldiers rest here, around fifty of them never identified.
Like all British war cemeteries, it is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission: mown lawns, rows of identical white headstones bearing the name, regiment, age and often a phrase chosen by the family, the Cross of Sacrifice with its bronze sword.
The entrance stone records that the land was given by the Italian people for the perpetual resting place of the sailors, soldiers and airmen who are buried here.
