Second Tower, la Cesta
The tower on the highest peak of Mount Titano, at 755 metres: inside, the Museum of Ancient Weapons with around 700 pieces.
La Cesta, also called Fratta, stands on the highest point of Mount Titano. It was already a watchtower in Roman times and its name appears in a document from 1253. In 1320 it was surrounded by a high wall and connected to the city's second ring of walls.
It has a pentagonal keep that preserves the appearance of medieval towers, with machicolations and loopholes for crossbows. The entrance door was opened in the sixteenth century: on the lintel, on either side of the Republic's coat of arms, is the date 1596. Disused from the seventeenth century, it was thoroughly restored in 1924 and 1925.
Since 1956 it has housed the Museum of Ancient Weapons: around 700 pieces, from fifteenth-century war axes to ceremonial halberds, from European armour to matchlock, wheel-lock and flintlock firearms, up to nineteenth-century rifles.
To reach it from the First Tower, follow the Passo delle Streghe, the path along the edge of the cliff. The ticket is the same State Museums Pass.
