Montale Gallery and the Historic Train
The gallery of the old Rimini-San Marino railway, carved through the Titano: inside, the restored 1932 railcar and a section of track back in operation.
In 1932 the electric railway between Rimini and San Marino was inaugurated: 32 kilometres of narrow gauge track, covered in about an hour. It operated for only twelve years.
During the Second World War the galleries gave shelter to thousands of evacuees seeking safety in neutral little San Marino. The bombing of 26 June 1944 damaged the line and the last train passed in July.
In 2012 a section of track, entirely in San Marino territory, was restored. In the Montale Gallery, which runs through the mountain, the AB 03 electric railcar is on display, restored after 68 years out of service. Since December 2022 the historic train has been running tourist services again and in 2026 the line reached the old San Marino Città station.
The gallery is free and always open: start from the Station forecourt. To find out when the historic train runs, ask at the Tourist Office.
