The bunkers in the pine forest of Punta Marina
Seven German bunkers from 1944 and a row of anti-tank dragon's teeth, amongst the pines just a stone's throw from the beach.
After 8 September 1943, the Germans, with the Todt Organisation, fortified the Adriatic coast from Pesaro to the Po Delta to defend against an Allied landing: around 130 kilometres of bunkers, minefields and barriers, now known as the Galla Placidia Line.
At Punta Marina Terme, in around 700 metres of pine forest, seven of different types remain: the Tobruk with its turret for a single man and the larger Regelbau, with the walkways that connected them. One of the Regelbau has been converted into a small museum.
At the start of the route there's an intact row of dragon's teeth, the pyramid-shaped concrete blocks placed to stop tanks. The front reached here in autumn 1944 and Ravenna was liberated on 4 December.
The Linea Galla Placidia project, led by the Pro Loco of Marina di Ravenna with the University of Bologna, has catalogued dozens of bunkers along the entire Ravenna coast, from Casalborsetti to Cervia.
