Borgo Maggiore
The market town at the foot of Mount Titano, founded in the 12th century: the cable car takes you in just a few minutes from Piazza Grande to the City.
It was founded in the 12th century with the name Mercatale, because it was the marketplace of the Republic. Its present name was given at the end of the 19th century, when it was the largest centre in the State. Together with the historic centre of the City, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The heart is Piazza Grande, with the clock tower built in 1896 by Francesco Azzurri, the same architect as the Palazzo Pubblico, and the house of Domenico Maria Belzoppi. Giuseppe and Anita Garibaldi stopped here briefly, fleeing from Rome in 1849.
The cable car starts from the square, opened in 1959 and rebuilt in 1996: in just a few minutes it climbs 166 metres to the centre of the City, with a panorama that opens out over the plain and the sea. It is the most convenient way to reach the towers.
The Sentiero della Rupe also starts from here, winding halfway up beneath the rock walls of Mount Titano, through the woods, with natural terraces overlooking the Adriatic. At Valdragone, not far away, there is the sanctuary of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
