Rocca di Bertinoro
The fortress on the 'balcony of Romagna', now home to Italy's only museum dedicated to dialogue between Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The fortress stands at the top of the hill of Bertinoro, 250 metres above sea level: thanks to the view over the plain to the sea, the town is called 'the balcony of Romagna'. The first records of the fortification date from the 11th century; in the Middle Ages it is said to have hosted Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
In the 16th century the fortress became the residence of the bishops of Bertinoro and remained so for centuries. Today it is owned by the University of Bologna, which has turned it into a conference and advanced training centre, and houses the Interreligious Museum in its cellars.
The museum is the only one in Italy dedicated to dialogue between the three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In the ancient dungeons you'll find objects of worship, texts and symbols of the three faiths, compared through a clear route that is also suitable for young people.
Outside, the fortress garden and the town square offer one of the most beautiful views in the province. Bertinoro is also wine country: after your visit, a glass of Albana or Sangiovese in one of the village cellars is almost obligatory.
