Casa Pascoli
The birthplace of Giovanni Pascoli, a national monument since 1924, with the rooms and garden of his poems.
Giovanni Pascoli was born in this house in San Mauro on 31 December 1855, the fourth of ten children. The town, which was then called San Mauro di Romagna, took his name in 1932: today it is San Mauro Pascoli. In 1924 the State declared the house a national monument.
Inside you will find the rooms of a 19th-century middle-class country house, with furniture, portraits, letters and family objects, and the rooms the poet recalls in his verses. The garden, with its vegetable patch and trees, is the one from his childhood memories that returns in so many poems in Myricae and Canti di Castelvecchio.
The family left the house after the death of his father in 1867, and Pascoli later lived in Bologna, Messina, Pisa and Castelvecchio di Barga in Tuscany. But the bond with San Mauro, his native town, remains very strong in his work.
On Sunday afternoons there are guided tours lasting about an hour. From here to Villa Torlonia is just a few minutes by car or bicycle: together they form the Parco della Poesia Pascoli. And the sea at San Mauro, with its beaches, is just a stone's throw away.
