Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Bagno di Romagna
The thousand-year-old basilica of the spa town, with 15th-century Florentine works.
Bagno di Romagna is the town of hot springs, frequented since Roman times, in the upper Savio valley. It was part of Tuscany for centuries and its stone-built historic centre has an unmistakably Florentine character.
The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, on Piazza Ricasoli, has been documented since 861 and is one of the most important religious monuments in Tuscan Romagna. The present building, renovated in the 15th century, houses works from the Florentine school, including an Assumption attributed to Neri di Bicci.
A few steps away, along Via Fiorentina, stands the Palazzo del Capitano, residence of the Guidi counts who ruled the town and later of the captain of the Republic of Florence, who established himself here in 1454. Today it houses a visitor centre for the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi: it's the best way to understand the area.
After your visit, treat yourself to the spa: the town's establishments offer hot water pools all year round. And the surrounding woods, up to the Ridracoli dam, are amongst the most beautiful in Italy.
