In depth
What it is
La casetta di Geppetto is a mechanical nativity scene set up inside Comacchioland, the Christmas village that every year brings life to the car park at Largo Cardinal Pallotta in Comacchio, in the province of Ferrara. This is not a church or museum nativity scene, but a Christmas-themed attraction designed especially for families and children, part of a broader programme of games, workshops and entertainment. The initiative is organised by VL Fusionlab together with Associazione Marasue, who collaborate on the organisation of the village and its offerings during the festive season.
What makes it special
The distinctive feature of la casetta di Geppetto lies in its reference to the character of Pinocchio, which gives its name and setting to the structure housing the mechanical nativity scene: the animated figurines of the Nativity are therefore presented within a fairy-tale themed scenography, designed for young children. It is also located in an unusual place for a nativity scene, a car park transformed for the occasion into a Christmas village, alongside other themed areas such as those dedicated to games and Christmas sweets. The sources consulted do not report the exact number of statues or mechanisms, nor technical details about the materials used.
Origins and history
No public sources are available that document precisely when la casetta di Geppetto was created or who had the original idea: the information available relates mainly to the most recent edition of the Comacchioland village, organised by VL Fusionlab and Associazione Marasue. It is known, however, that Comacchio has long had a strong widespread nativity tradition, with displays under the arches of the historic bridges in the centre (including the Trepponti) organised by Associazione Marasue together with other local groups; la casetta di Geppetto fits into this broader context of Christmas initiatives in the town, but without sources describing its specific historical evolution over time.
What to see
Inside the casetta, visitors find a mechanical nativity scene, with animated figures representing the Nativity scene, set in surroundings that play on the connection with the story of Pinocchio and his carpenter. Around it, in the rest of the Comacchioland village, you can meet Father Christmas and his elves, take part in creative themed workshops, watch shows such as the travelling circus, and stop in the area dedicated to hot drinks and Christmas sweets. The route is designed for a family audience, with roaming entertainment and mascot characters accompanying children between the different stations.
When and how to visit
Comacchioland, with la casetta di Geppetto, usually opens between early December and the first days of January: in its last documented edition it was open from 7 December 2025 to 6 January 2026. Opening times follow those of the village, generally in the afternoons, with slots on main opening days indicatively from 10:30 to 12:30 and from 15:00 to 17:30; it should be noted that times may vary from one day to another during the festive period. The sources consulted do not indicate an admission price for la casetta di Geppetto or for the village as a whole. For the date and times of the current edition, it is advisable to check the official Christmas programme in Comacchio published by the municipality before visiting.
