Half day Art Towns Sunset

Comacchio in the afternoon and the Remo Brindisi House Museum

The house museum at Lido di Spina with Fontana and twentieth-century art, then on foot to the cathedral, the Loggia del Grano, the Loggiato dei Cappuccini and the Trepponti at sunset.

A leisurely tour for those staying at the Lidi: twentieth-century art in the house that the painter Remo Brindisi had built in the pine forest of Lido di Spina, then Comacchio on foot when the canals take on colour. This complements the boat trip in the Valli, which is in the Ravenna section.

What you will see

1Lido di Spina

Casa Museo Remo Brindisi 60 min

The painter Remo Brindisi had it built between 1971 and 1973, designed by the architect Nanda Vigo, and left it to the municipality of Comacchio. Architecture, painting, sculpture and design blend without boundaries, around a large cylinder connecting the floors. About two thousand twentieth-century works: Balla, Sironi, De Pisis, Manzoni, Pop Art and the great graffito by Lucio Fontana, six metres by four, one of his finest works. Brindisi is buried in the garden, among the pines.

Spring and autumn Thursday to Sunday, afternoon until 6.30 pm; in summer Tuesday to Sunday 7 pm to 11 pm; in other months phone ahead. Included in the Comacchio Museum Pass.

2Comacchio centre

Duomo di San Cassiano 15 min

Consecrated in 1740 to a design by the Roman Angelo Cerruti, it looks enormous among the low houses of the canals. Brick and Istrian stone façade, detached bell tower on the square. Comacchio had its own bishop for over a thousand years, until 1986.

Free entry, outside Mass times.

Loggia del Grano and Torre Civica 10 min

The seventeenth-century public granary, on Istrian stone columns, attributed to Giovan Battista Aleotti, where the city kept reserves for famines. Next to it the Torre dell'Orologio, rebuilt after its collapse in 1816.

Viewed from outside.

Loggiato dei Cappuccini and Santa Maria in Aula Regia 25 min

A row of 142 arches on marble columns, over 400 metres long, built from 1647 to link the centre to the sanctuary. On the altar the Renaissance terracotta statue of the Madonna del Popolo, protector of the city.

Sanctuary open morning and afternoon, closed at lunchtime.

The Trepponti at sunset 10 min

The five brick stairways from 1638 over the Pallotta canal, with plaques to Ariosto and Tasso on the turrets. At sunset the bricks turn red and the bridge is reflected in the water.

Tips

  • In summer do the tour in reverse: Comacchio at sunset, then the house museum after 7 pm, finishing with a fish dinner.
  • If you also want the boat in the Valli and the Manifattura dei Marinati, take the 'Comacchio and the Valli' tour in the Ravenna section.
