Chioggia, the little Venice of the southern lagoon
Corso del Popolo, the Canal Vena with fishermen's boats, the fish market, Longhena's cathedral and the column with St Mark's lion at Vigo.
An hour north on the Romea and you enter the Venetian lagoon. Chioggia is built on islands, with canals, bridges and narrow streets like Venice, but it's a fishermen's town, lively and without crowds. Here in 1379-1380 the War of Chioggia was fought between Venice and Genoa.

What you will see
1Chioggia old town
Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta 20 min
The mediaeval cathedral burnt down on Christmas night 1623; the new one was entrusted to Baldassarre Longhena, who would later build the Salute in Venice. The first mass was celebrated in 1627, the consecration in 1674.
Free entry, outside service times.
Corso del Popolo and the Canal Vena 40 min
The main street runs right through the town from the cathedral to Piazzetta Vigo, lined with palaces, churches and arcades. Running parallel is the Canal Vena, the canal of the fishermen's boats, crossed by humpback bridges: this is the most photographed Chioggia.
The fish market 20 min
Chioggia has one of the most important fish markets in Italy. The retail market, on the Canal Vena, is a spectacle of stalls, voices and freshly landed Adriatic fish.
Mornings only: check which days.
Piazzetta Vigo and the Ponte di Vigo 15 min
At the end of the corso, on the lagoon, stands the marble column with the small lion of St Mark, symbol of Venice's long rule, and the Ponte di Vigo, the town's best-known bridge, over the Vena canal.
Tips
The fish market is the reason to go in the morning; in the afternoon the town is quieter and the light on the canals is at its best.
Sottomarina, Chioggia's beach, is right next to the town: in summer the return journey on the Romea is slow, so leave yourself plenty of time.
