Piazza Maggiore
The heart of Bologna, between San Petronio and the Neptune fountain.
The square is enclosed by the palaces of medieval power and by the basilica of San Petronio, one of the largest churches in Italy, its facade left half finished. Inside, across the floor, runs the long meridian line traced by Cassini in the seventeenth century.
Next to it is the Neptune fountain by Giambologna, and behind the arcades begins the Quadrilatero, the market streets where you can stop to eat.
