In depth
What it is
The mechanical nativity scene of Marina di Ravenna is a Christmas installation set up inside the parish church of San Giuseppe, at via Tito Speri 20, in the coastal hamlet of Marina di Ravenna, in the municipality of Ravenna. It is a mountain-style nativity scene, with figures that move thanks to a mechanical system and lighting that gradually alternates day and night, accompanied by background music. It is one of the most popular Christmas attractions among the nativity scenes set up along the Ravenna coast, designed for families and visitors passing through during the holidays.
What makes it special
What makes this nativity scene particular is first of all the technique: the figures are not static, but animated by mechanisms that make them move, whilst a programmed light display reproduces the passage from day to night, adding scenic depth to the setting. The structure is made of polystyrene, a material that allows the modelling of a mountain landscape with rocks, paths and small Alpine-style buildings, in an almost theatrical contrast with the seaside and coastal context of the hamlet that hosts it. Sources from the Comune di Ravenna indicate dimensions of approximately four metres by three for the installation. Inside the same church, other smaller nativity scenes are also visible, so that the visit becomes a small journey through different interpretations of the Nativity.
Origins and history
The nativity scene was created on the initiative of the parish community of San Giuseppe, which made it by hand approximately fifteen years ago. Available sources do not report the name of who conceived it nor the exact date the project began: what is documented is that, since then, the work has been expanded and enriched year after year, with the progressive addition of details, figures and mechanisms, until reaching its current appearance. Not being a signed work or linked to a single known artist, the nativity scene of Marina di Ravenna fits into the widespread tradition in Romagna of parish nativity scenes built and maintained over time by volunteers and enthusiasts from the town.
What to see
Visitors find themselves before a miniature mountain scenography, populated by slowly moving figurines, including shepherds, animals and scenes of everyday mountain life, built almost entirely from worked and painted polystyrene. The light cycle that simulates the alternation between day and night is one of the elements most appreciated by visitors, together with the soundtrack that accompanies the scene. Besides the main mechanical nativity scene, other smaller format nativity scenes are displayed in the church of San Giuseppe, offering further points of interest before or after visiting the main one.
When and how to visit
The nativity scene is set up every year during the Christmas period, generally from the first days of December until mid or late January. In the last documented edition, opening ran from 8 December 2025 to 19 January 2026, with opening hours on weekdays from 9am to 5.30pm. Admission is free. This information refers to the most recent known edition and should not be automatically considered valid for the current year: those wishing to visit are invited to check updated times and dates with the parish of San Giuseppe or the tourist offices of the Comune di Ravenna before planning their visit.
