In depth
What it is
Presepi in Vista is one of the most characteristic Christmas initiatives in Pieve di Cento, a small town in the province of Bologna on the border with the Ferrara area, famous for its well-preserved arcaded historic centre. It is not a single nativity scene, but a widespread trail: during the Christmas period dozens and dozens of nativity scenes set up by the inhabitants themselves are made visible from the street, among gardens, shop windows, balconies, windows and courtyards of the town. Visitors strolling through the streets of the centre can thus discover, looking out at almost every corner, a small representation of the Nativity different from the others.
What makes it special
The distinctive feature of this event is not a single monumental nativity scene, but its widespread distribution throughout the town: sources speak of around two hundred nativity scenes displayed in the most participated years, a number that has led to Pieve di Cento being defined as the first municipality in Emilia Romagna for an initiative of this scale and with such broad participation from the population. There are no requirements for size or artistic quality: each family, shop or business sets up its own nativity scene with the materials and style it prefers, from the simplest to the most elaborate, and makes it visible to passers-by. The setting itself, the town with its arcades, small squares and brick houses typical of the lower Bologna area, becomes part of the experience, transforming a simple walk into a small nativity scene hunt through alleyways and courtyards.
Origins and history
The initiative was born several years ago through the will of the parish and the group of friends of the nativity scene of Pieve di Cento, with the aim of bringing back to the centre of Christmas the meaning of the birth of Jesus, in a period of the year dominated by lights and commercial displays. Over time the project has grown to involve the entire town, thanks to collaboration between the parish, the culture department of the Municipality of Pieve di Cento, the Pro Loco and local traders. Residents who have already participated in the past are automatically reconfirmed year after year, whilst those displaying their nativity scene for the first time must register with their name, surname and address at the presbytery or the town's newsagents. Around mid-December photographs of the nativity scenes are taken, which are then displayed in the square by Christmas. Available sources do not report a certain starting year for the initiative nor the name of who first conceived it; the last documented edition dates back to 2017/2018, a year in which around two hundred nativity scenes were counted.
What to see
Walking through the historic centre of Pieve di Cento, among the arcades, low houses and courtyards typical of the town, one encounters nativity scenes of all kinds: traditional terracotta or plastic figurines, small handcrafted grottos, compositions with recycled materials, nativity scenes set up in shop windows or hung on balconies and windows of private homes. There is no official signposted route with fixed stops: it is the spontaneous discovery, looking beyond the railings of gardens or the windows of commercial activities, that provides the common thread of the visit. Over the years, alongside the nativity scenes of private individuals, collateral initiatives have also appeared, such as exhibitions of crocheted nativity scenes or Christmas-themed photographic exhibitions in the town's museums and halls.
When and how to visit
Presepi in Vista traditionally takes place during the Christmas holiday period, between the end of December and Epiphany: in documented editions the display period has run from 23 or 24 December to 6 January. As these are nativity scenes set up outdoors or visible from the street in houses, shops and private courtyards, there are no opening hours in the strict sense nor an entrance ticket: the route is free and accessible on foot at any time of day, with the care to respect the tranquillity of the inhabitants who open their homes and gardens to the gaze of passers-by. For dates and any opening hours of the current edition it is advisable to check with the Municipality of Pieve di Cento or the local Pro Loco, since the information gathered here refers to past editions and may not be confirmed for the current year.
